As part of the State of Hawaii’s ambitious 12-year, $2.7 billion Hawaii Airports Modernization Program, the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) undertook a transformative initiative to enhance the travel experience at its airports. One of the key components of this comprehensive program was the development of consolidated rental car facilities (conRAC) at three major airports, aimed at improving convenience, efficiency, and sustainability for travelers and airport operations alike.
A centerpiece of this initiative is the state-of-the-art, five-story consolidated rent-a-car facility at Honolulu International Airport, Hawaii’s busiest and most significant travel hub. Designed as a three-phase development project, the facility serves as a model of modern infrastructure and operational excellence. By centralizing rental car operations into a single, easily accessible location, the conRAC project eliminates the need for scattered facilities, reducing congestion and streamlining the rental car process for millions of annual visitors.
The Honolulu conRAC facility incorporates innovative design elements, including designated areas for car washing, fueling, and maintenance, ensuring operational efficiency while supporting environmental sustainability through water recycling and energy-saving technologies. In addition to serving travelers, the facility is strategically positioned to alleviate traffic around the airport, enhancing overall accessibility for passengers.
This project represents a significant milestone in Hawaii’s broader effort to modernize its airport infrastructure. By prioritizing traveler convenience, operational efficiency, and sustainability, the HDOT’s conRAC development underscores its commitment to maintaining Hawaii’s reputation as a world-class travel destination, aligning with the state’s vision for a modern, welcoming airport system.
