The commercial shipyard in Philadelphia, established in 1997 by Kværner Philadelphia Shipyard, represents a pivotal step in the City of Philadelphia’s broader efforts to revitalize and repurpose the former U.S. naval base. This transformation initiative, which began in 1995, aimed to repurpose the decommissioned naval facility into a hub for maritime commerce and industrial activity, breathing new economic life into the region.
Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, now part of Philly Shipyard, played a key role in this effort, constructing four state-of-the-art product tankers, identified as Hull Numbers 21, 22, 23, and 24. These tankers are vital assets in the transport of refined petroleum products, designed to meet the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and environmental compliance.
Beyond construction, Aker established a strategic partnership with Crowley Petroleum Services, forming a collaborative framework to own, manage, and operate these tankers. Under this partnership, Aker and Crowley share ownership of the vessels and deploy them under time charter agreements with major oil companies, ensuring reliable and efficient delivery of petroleum products across their networks.
The shipyard’s success reflects the broader impact of public-private partnerships in stimulating economic development and advancing U.S. maritime capabilities. This project has not only contributed to Philadelphia’s industrial resurgence but also underscores the strategic importance of fostering innovation and collaboration in the maritime sector. The shipyard remains a symbol of Philadelphia’s transition from a historic naval stronghold to a center of modern shipbuilding and maritime commerce.
